Whew, went off the radar there for a day or two, and even a day without constantly responding to emails et al can leave you buried. Especially when you spend those days drinking heavily. So, a couple of things:
1. Tweeted Short Story Fail: I tried to set up the short story tweet over at http://twitter.com/somers_story using an automated twitter tool that allows you to schedule out tweets in advance. This resulted in a jumbled bunch of tweets that made no sense. Sadly, no one noticed. Anyway, I’m going to begin tweeting the Cates short story “The Oldest Bastard on the Block” again today at 3pm, and every going forward until 8/12 or so. And this time it’ll be manually done, so there shouldn’t be any more Fail. or at least no more Fail than usual.
2. I had a birthday. This is what birthday gifts look like at the Somers Compound:
(From left: The Singleton 12yr, Redbreast 12yr, Glenmorangie 18yr, Jameson 18yr) AH, what a time to be alive!
ALSO, and certainly not least, my wife The Duchess got me what may be the greatest gift ever in the history of gifts given to sodden writers. This lovely woman took it upon herself to track down Jae Lee – yes, that Jae Lee, the amazing guy who has done all 3 covers for the Cates books so far – and prevailed upon him to not only sign copies of the Cates books, but to doodle in them as well. Behold Birthday Win:
So there you have it – I have the best wife in the world, and you do not. Have a great weekend!
Well, happy belated birthday.
Those pictures are pretty sweet, especially the Digital Plague one. Also, I really would like to read the short story but I really don’t want to get a twitter account. Is that the only place the story will be available?
Hey Pillman,
For the time being, the story’s only a Tweet. However, once we’re done tweeting, I’ll probably post it somewhere or offer it up. I’ll keep you in mind and let you know. Or else I’ll completely forget and you’ll have to remind me!

yes, well, I guess if your wikipedia page would have been up sooner, then maybe I might have known it was your birthday. Both sets of presents are amazingly beautiful. I do believe the wifes gift wins gift of the year though. Those are fantastic little sketches.
Teh coolness! A talented draftsman.
Happy birthday, Jeffster. I have just drunk a flask of Wild Turkey in a posh-of-repute-but-squalid-when-it-comes-down-to-the-blank-facticity-of-things hotel room. Little did I know it was in your unwitting honour. I earlier enjoyed a smaller measure of Islay’s finest, three pints of variable quality, and a curry of proportions I would not deemed it feasible to have been served to mortal man prior to his having said ‘I’m thinking of reviewing your place for my blog. These I would not necessarily have considered to have been of a suitable quality to have toasted you with.
Anyway, must close as I’m off to drink myself into a state of mind equivalent to a brisk dip in Lethe’s hoary depths.
A glass to you.
That whisky haul looks great, BTW. Props to D.
Happy belated birthday, looks like birthday time at my house!
Several whiskys I haven’t tried there, but my favourites are a 10 yr old Laphroaig, my favourite of the Islay malts, briny, but not as briny as Lagavulin (yum) and Talisker (from the Isle of Skye), a little more peppery than briny.
Gord, Never had Lagavulin, but will add it to my “keep an eye out” list. Laphroaig and Talisker are both very welcome in this house.
