Sci fi and fantasy (and sci-fantasy) are often treated as separate genres, but in terms of mechanics they’re fundamentally the same. Understanding that similarity will make building worlds in any genre much easier, and the fundamental lesson is that all SFF needs a system—a technology system, or a magic system—and behind the words they are essentially the same thing in terms of mechanics. There are, therefore, some evergreen rules and guidelines that apply to the creation of both.
